The Ethereum Time Capsule: Preserving the Past, Protecting the Future

To celebrate Ethereum's 10th anniversary, we invite the entire Ethereum ecosystem to leave its mark permanently on the chain.
The Ethereum Time Capsule: Preserving the Past, Protecting the Future

Launching today, 30 June 2025, at EthCC in Cannes, the Ethereum Time Capsule will gather memories, messages, memes, predictions, art, and on-chain artifacts from builders, artists, traders, and users worldwide.

Submissions will be open for one month, closing on 30 July 2025, exactly ten years to the day since Ethereum's genesis block.

The Ethereum genesis block at the brainbot office

At brainbot, we've been committed to the Ethereum ecosystem for more than a decade, even before Ethereum launched in 2015. Today, we are honored to present the Ethereum Time Capsule together with EthCC, and Protocol Guild.

The time capsule is open for submissions now at ethtimecapsule.com.

Ethereum Time Capsule

A New Kind of Archive

The Ethereum Time Capsule is a cryptographically sealed, censorship-resistant archive of Ethereum's history. Users from all around the world can submit their digital memories: stories of buidling, breakthrough moments, heartfelt posts, timeless memes, NFT art, and on-chain artifacts.

Each submission is encrypted using Shutter's threshold encryption. Submissions remain private and tamper-proof for one year, then automatically decrypt and publish onchain on 30 July 2026.

By leveraging Shutter, the capsule ensures no one — not even the organizers — can access or modify the contents before the reveal. What you submit stays sealed until it's time to unveil Ethereum's collective memory.

Ten Years of Ethereum

Over the past decade, Ethereum has evolved from a whitepaper and a vision into a global settlement layer and innovation platform. Everything from smart contracts, DAOs, ICOs, NFTs, rollups, DeFi, PBS, and more, Ethereum has consistently pushed the boundaries of what's possible in open networks.

This anniversary is an opportunity to acknowledge the builders, researchers, artists, and users who have carried Ethereum forward, and the Ethereum Time Capsule offers a way to document this journey in personal moments and community voices.

Key Milestones

  • Opening Date: 30 June 2025 — Capsule opens for submissions at EthCC[8]
  • Closing Date: 30 July 2025 — Final day to contribute, exactly ten years after the genesis block
  • Reveal Date: 30 July 2026 — Encrypted submissions are decrypted and immutably recorded on Ethereum

How to Participate

Participating is simple:

  1. Visit ethtimecapsule.com
  2. Upload your contribution
  3. Pay the submission fee (0.001 ETH / ~$2.50)

Each submission is encrypted with Shutter and recorded onchain. One year later, it will be decrypted and added to Ethereum's permanent archive.

Supporting Ethereum Core Development

100% of proceeds from the Ethereum Time Capsule go directly to the Protocol Guild, supporting the long-term sustainability of Ethereum core research and development. As Ethereum matures, sustaining the protocol's neutral infrastructure and public goods becomes more critical than ever.

In Their Words

"The Ethereum Time Capsule initiative is a great way to commemorate a defining decade of Ethereum. It's a great chance for builders, artists and devs to come together and reflect on progress over the last 10 years, as we gear up for exciting times ahead."

Cheeky Gorilla, Protocol Guild

"The Ethereum time capsule is a forward-looking application of threshold encryption – preserving collective memory while ensuring tamper-resistance and censorship protection. By committing encrypted entries on-chain, we can guarantee submissions remain private and unaltered until the coordinated reveal in 2026."

Luis Bezzenberger, Head of Product at brainbot

"Celebrating our history is key to nurture Ethereum's culture and values. The past 10 years have been one of the most exciting adventures of the millennia. We are pleased to support this initiative, what a great way to kick off the next decade of blockchain adoption!"

Jérôme de Tychey, President of Ethereum-France - Founder of EthCC commented
